Snake Myths

Snake Myths

The Snake is a powerful symbol in Indian mythology and Hinduism. The 'Nag' is worshipped by people across the country. Some of these mythical snakes are protectors, while others are destroyers. The picture of Lord Shiva is incomplete without the cobra around his neck, and Lord Vishnu rests on a seven headed snake. There are hundreds of references to snakes with mythical powers in stories and epics. This has made snakes a powerful symbol in the Indian culture. But there are thousands of beliefs and myths surrounding snakes, widespread in the country, which are misleading. Most of them are spread by the snake charmers. During our snake rescues, our team members are showered with questions such as "Do snakes drink milk?" or "Is there a two headed snake?"

Red Sorceress and Black Dragon Legends

TIAMAT AND MARDUK

In this story it is said that before the time of the gods and the world there was nothing but a waste of chaotic waters ruled by Apsu and Tiamat, a dragon-like creature. As time passed gods were created in hopes of bringing order to this chaos. One of the gods, Ea, slay Apsu, thus making Tiamat and her brood of monsters mad at the gods. Tiamat waged war against Ea and the other gods and was successful in stifling their efforts until Marduk was born. Marduk was the strongest and the wisest of the gods and was elected to deal with Tiamat once and for all. Upon summoning the powers of all of the other gods, Marduk went to war with Tiamat. Tiamat was no match for Marduk and all of his powers. Marduk caught her in his net and when she opened her mouth to breath fire at him, he let loose the four winds which filled her up rendering her defenseless . Marduk then speared her with a lightning bolt, split her in two and raised half of her body to create the sky and with the other half created the earth.

This is a classic example of a male deity slaying a female dragon or serpent-like monster in an attempt to replace a cooperative, "chaotic" natural order with a hierarchical, paternal, and often monotheistic system.

Dragon & Snake Legends

The dragon is bigger than all other snakes or all other living things on earth. For this reason, the Greeks call it dracon, from this is derived its Latin name draco. The dragon, it is said, is often drawn forth from caves into the open air, causing the air to become turbulent. The dragon has a crest, a small mouth, and narrow blow-holes through which it breathes and puts forth its tongue. Its strength lies not in its teeth but in its tail, and it kills with a blow rather than a bite. It is free from poison. They say that it does not need poison to kill things, because it kills anything around which it wraps its tail. From the dragon not even the elephant, with its huge size, is safe. For lurking on paths along which elephants are accustomed to pass, the dragon knots its tail around their legs and kills them by suffocation. Dragons are born in Ethiopia and India, where it is hot all year round. The Devil is like the dragon; he is the most monstrous serpent of all; he is often aroused from his cave and causes the air to shine because, emerging from the depths, he transforms himself into the angel of light and deceives the foolish with hopes of vainglory and worldly pleasure. The dragon is said to be crested, as the Devil wears the crown of the king of pride. The dragon's strength lies not in its teeth but its tail, as the Devil, deprived of his strength, deceives with lies those whom he draws to him. The dragon lurks around paths along which elephants pass, as the Devil entangles with the knots of sin the way of those bound for heaven and, like the dragon, kills them by suffocation; because anyone who dies fettered in the chains of his offences is condemned without doubt to hell.

Lavender sorceress

A Venefica was a Roman sorceress who used drugs, potions, and poison for several reasons. Venefica means "a female who poisons" in Latin. The word appears in one of Sir Francis Bacon's Essays,"Of Friendship" in the following lines:

"And it seemeth his favour was so great, as Antonius, in a letter which is recited verbatim in one of Cicero’s Philippics, calleth him ‘venefica,’ witch, —as if he had enchanted Caesar."

  1. A woman of great charm or fascination.
  2. A woman who practices magic; a sorceress.

Demons exist in every level of second life

Demons exist in every crack and crevice of the globe. In Japan the are called oni, in India devas, in England bogies and in Scotland gyres; but by any name, fiendish spirits are up to no good. Demonologists throughout the ages have tried to sort out a hierarchy of demons, leaving a morass of definitions in their wake. It is generally agreed that, although certain similarities exist, we pitiful humans have no way of knowing whether we are dealing with a good spirit or an evil one. To be on the safe side, one should expect the worst. According to Guazzo's Compdenium Meleficarum (1608) there are six families, or genera, of demons.

Fiery

The first are demons who dwell in the upper air and will not touch ground or cause trouble until the Last Judgment.

Aerial The second are devils who stir up the atmosphere and cause turbulence, storms, hurricanes, and thundering tempests as they try to destroy mankind. These creatures may descend into Hell and will make themselves visible to humans if called upon to do so.
Terrestrial Living in forests, glens and knolls, these hellions lay in wait for unexpecting passersby. One is apt to find them in a lonely field or behind a rocky outpost, giving false directions to lost travelers. Off all the families, these demons are the most common; they live secretly among people, mimicking their habits and befriending them in order to learn their darkest secrets and betray them.
Aqueous Living in oceans, rivers, and streams, these powers of darkness raise storms at sea, sink ships, and drown swimmers. Associated with mermaids and the sirens from the Iliad, they frequently appear in seductive female forms. Their leader is the ignominous beast Leviathan.
Subterranean

This batch of demons lives in caves and caverns and harasses miners and other workers who toil beneath the earth. They are the source of earthquakes, wildfire, and dry, hot winds that scourge the earth.

Heliophobic The final breed of demons are the most malicious. Homicidal and merciless, these demons only appear at night and, with one blast of their noixious, icy breath, will kill a person who has the misfortune of running into them.

NIGHTSHADE DARKNESS AVATAR

has gone by many names, including belladonna, Devil's cherries, Naughty Man's cherries, Devil's Herb, Great Morel, and Dwayberry. It was once known as Dwale. The origin of the word is unknown; one scholar believes it is derived from the Scandinavian word dool, which means sleep. Others believe dwale is derived from the French word deuil, which means grief. The atropain the scientific name refers to one of the Greek Fates, Atropos, who held the shears which cut the thread of human life. Belldonna is thought to refer to the practice of Italian ladies using the juice of the plant to dilate their pupils-this gave their eyes greater brilliancy. However, it could also refer to a superstition which says that the plant can take on the form of an enchantress of great beauty. It is also thought that the priests of the goddess Bellona drank an infusion of the herb before invoking the aid of this goddess of war.
